Cultural Crossroads:

Dvořák in America

Cultural Crossroads: Dvořák in America is a live concert experience that explores the Black and Indigenous influences on Dvořák during his time in America. The program weaves original Native American melodies and moving African American Spirituals along with Dvořák’s most beloved chamber music. Short videos and imagery add to this powerful multimedia experience. Cultural Crossroads, with its stellar cast of musicians, is a catalyst for audience engagement as it entertains, educates, and inspires, drawn from the curiosity of a Czech composer a century ago.

Cultural Crossroads: Dvořák in America, an ensemble of eight musicians, is available for international touring. Ensemble members include Bass Kenneth Kellogg, Native flutist R. Carlos Nakai, the Ciompi Quartet, percussionist Will Clipman, and violist Pamela Freund-Striplen.

Cultural Crossroads: Dvorak in America results from decades of research and development. Special thanks to the musicians whose meaningful contributions during the global pandemic and beyond helped to shape the project. We thank Soprano Michele Kennedy, the Alexander String Quartet, and Native flutist Mary Youngblood (featured in the archival video) for their artistry and fundamental discussions.

Beginning in 1098 with the mystical Hildegard von Bingen, Threads weaves a story about the power of female creativity to overcome and transform the culture in which they lived. The lineage of sisters Lily and Nadia Boulanger and Nadia’s famous pupil Thea Musgrave makes the case for generations forging new paths. Music by Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon, Amy Beach, and Geraldine Mucha create a diverse musical tapestry intertwined with readings from the stage.
